Why this preparation needs depth
Advanced preparation asks you to connect ideas, analyse a situation and choose a method—not simply recognise a familiar question.
IIT admission route
JEE Advanced is used for admission to undergraduate programmes at the IITs.
Connected concepts
Practise explaining why an approach works before making it faster.
Unfamiliar problems
Build the habit of drawing, estimating and testing your assumptions.
Reflective practice
Revisit a hard question after a break and compare alternative solutions.
Exam pattern overview
Understand the structure so you can plan your preparation.
Two papers
Paper 1 and Paper 2 are both compulsory
Duration
3 hours for each paper in the standard duration
Question design
Comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability across PCM
Marking rules
Read each section’s instructions; penalties can differ by question type
Pattern shown from the 2026 official publication. Re-check the bulletin, syllabus and admission rules for your own examination year; later notices take precedence. Do not assume a fixed question count or total marks from an earlier paper. The examination instructions specify the marking scheme.

JEE Advanced FAQ
Clear answers to common preparation questions.
Who can appear for JEE Advanced?
The official brochure sets several conditions, including the applicable JEE Main qualification route, age, attempts, qualifying-examination history and previous IIT admission rules. Exceptions may apply, so use the brochure for your own year and circumstances.
Must I take both papers?
Yes. The 2026 brochure requires candidates to appear in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 to be considered for evaluation and rank-list preparation.
Is the marking scheme always the same?
No. Do not transfer the total marks, question types or penalties from a past paper to a future examination. Read the instructions for every section of the paper you are taking.
How can I move from Main to Advanced preparation?
Keep the same foundations, but spend more time on connected ideas, unfamiliar situations and complete explanations. After solving a problem, ask what would change if one of its conditions changed.
Take the next step towards your IIT goal.
