Who this is for
Eligible students and graduates considering postgraduate study, research or recruitment routes that accept GATE scores. Degree eligibility is wider than engineering alone; check the current rules and the requirements of your intended institution or employer.
Stronger fundamentals today. More possibilities tomorrow.
Why GATE matters
A useful academic and professional route, with opportunities that have their own admission or recruitment conditions.
Postgraduate study
A GATE score may support applications to relevant postgraduate programmes.
Research goals
Use deep subject understanding as a foundation for further academic work.
Selected recruitment
Some employers use GATE scores under their own recruitment rules.
Professional foundations
Strengthen the concepts you will use beyond the examination.
Exam pattern overview
Understand the structure so you can plan your preparation.
Question formats
MCQ, multiple-select and numerical-answer questions
Paper size
65 questions for 100 marks
2027 official pattern
Duration
3 hours in the standard duration
MCQ penalties
One-third or two-thirds of a mark for an incorrect MCQ
Depends on whether the question carries 1 or 2 marks
MSQ and NAT
No negative marking; no partial marking for MSQs
Pattern shown from the published GATE 2027 guidance, checked on 10 October 2026. Engineering Mathematics is included only where the chosen paper specifies it—not in every GATE paper. Syllabi and permitted two-paper combinations have been revised; use the current official documents.

GATE FAQ
Clear answers to common preparation questions.
Is Engineering Mathematics compulsory in every GATE paper?
No. Its inclusion and mark allocation depend on the paper. General Aptitude is common, while the remaining syllabus follows your selected test paper.
Can I take two papers?
The official rules permit one or up to two papers, but only approved combinations may be selected. Check the current two-paper combination list rather than assuming any pair is allowed.
Does qualifying guarantee admission or a PSU job?
No. Each admitting institution and recruiting organisation sets its own eligibility and selection conditions. A qualifying GATE score is not a guaranteed admission, scholarship or employment offer.
Which year’s syllabus should I use?
Use the syllabus for the examination you plan to take. GATE 2027 guidance was already published when this page was reviewed, and its syllabi include revisions. An older topic list should not be treated as the complete current syllabus.
