Who this is for
Students considering ICAI's Foundation route and meeting its registration, study-period and qualifying-examination conditions. Course registration and eligibility to sit the examination are separate; use ICAI's current rules for your circumstances.
Strong foundations begin with asking why an entry or rule works.
Why the Foundation stage deserves careful preparation
Build habits you can carry into more advanced professional study: clear workings, precise language and a reasoned approach.
An entry-level route
Foundation is a stage in ICAI's CA course, not the complete qualification.
Accounting logic
Connect each transaction with the effect it has on a set of accounts.
Business judgement
Learn to recognise the legal or economic principle behind a situation.
Balanced practice
Prepare written solutions as well as objective decisions under a clock.
Exam pattern overview
Understand the structure so you can plan your preparation.
Paper 1
Accounting: subjective assessment
Paper 2
Business Laws: subjective assessment
Papers 3 and 4
Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics: objective assessment
Objective marking
A wrong objective response carries a 0.25-mark deduction
New Scheme reference. ICAI's course FAQ states 40% in each paper and 50% aggregate at one sitting as the Foundation passing criteria. Business Correspondence is not a separate component of the current Business Laws paper. Check the institute's enrolment notice, syllabus, applicable amendments, exemptions and training requirements for your own examination term. Passing an examination is not the same as completing all qualification or membership requirements.

CA Foundation FAQ
Clear answers to common preparation questions.
Is Business Laws and Correspondence still the current Paper 2?
No. Under the New Scheme, Paper 2 is Business Laws. Do not plan your current preparation from an older syllabus that combined it with correspondence and reporting.
Are all Foundation papers multiple-choice?
No. Accounting and Business Laws are subjective; Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics are objective. Prepare the answer-writing demands of the first two papers as well as objective accuracy.
Does Quantitative Aptitude include reasoning?
Yes. It combines Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Statistics. Give each component a place in your plan rather than treating the paper as mathematics alone.
Can course registration and examination eligibility differ?
Yes. Check the qualifying-examination, study-period, registration and examination-enrolment conditions separately. ICAI's current notice determines whether you can sit a particular term.
Does passing Foundation make me a Chartered Accountant?
No. Foundation is an entry-level examination within a longer course. Later examinations, training and other institute requirements must also be completed.
