UPSC FAQ

Clear answers to common preparation questions.

What are the stages of UPSC Civil Services?

For preparation, the route is Prelims, the Main written examination and the Personality Test. The official scheme groups the written Main and interview within the Main examination.

Is CSAT only qualifying?

Yes. General Studies Paper II in Prelims is qualifying. Do not leave aptitude and comprehension practice until the end of your preparation.

How should I choose an optional subject?

Read the official optional syllabus and sample papers, then consider your interest, existing understanding and the study time available. There is no universally best optional subject.

Where can I check eligibility and permitted attempts?

Use the linked UPSC notification. The applicable rules depend on category and other conditions; a general preparation page cannot determine your eligibility.
